Unpleasant AC smell is common in the region — and fixing it starts with accurate source identification. Air fresheners mask the problem temporarily and treat nothing.
Odour Diagnosis Guide — Every Smell, Its Source and Fix
Musty or Stale Smell
Source: Mould growing on the evaporator coil or in the condensate tray. Most common in Jazan due to coastal humidity, but occurs in Khamis Mushait and Abha in units unused for extended periods.
Permanent fix: Clean the coil with anti-fungal agents + anti-mould treatment in the tray + adopt the habit of running "Fan Only" for 15 minutes after switching off cooling.
Wet Sock or Animal Smell (Dirty Sock Syndrome)
Source: Pseudomonas bacteria growing on the evaporator coil of inverter AC units when switching between cooling and heating modes. More common in Abha which uses both modes.
Fix: Disinfect coil with specialist bactericide + install UV-C lamp for sustainable prevention.
Burning or Melting Plastic Smell
Source: Electrical problem — wiring or an electronic component overheating. Hazardous. Switch off immediately at the main breaker and call us.
Sharp Chemical Smell
Source: Refrigerant leak or damaged internal insulation materials. Open windows immediately and call us for a leak inspection.
Sewer or Stagnant Water Smell
Source: The condensate drain terminates near a sewage drain with sewer gas coming back. Common in some older AC installations.
Fix: Re-route the condensate drain outlet + install a water trap in the pipe.
